Stocal Enamels Ltd UK Vintage Enamel Signs Makers

Hailing from Burton, England, Stocal Enamels Ltd was the creative force behind many iconic enamel sign designs still cherished today.

Stocal entered the realm of enamel signs relatively late, starting out as a manufacturer of enamelled steel tiles in 1913. Soon, however, they recognised the immense potential of enamel signs and shifted their focus.

By the 1930s, Stocal was riding the wave of success, boasting a workforce numbering in the hundreds and securing commissions from prestigious names like Castrol Wakefield Motor Oil Enamel Signs.

However, the path to prosperity was not without its challenges. While Stocal endeavoured to foster a sense of camaraderie among its employees through annual company excursions and a slew of social events including dinners, dances and concerts, the working conditions were marred by safety concerns. Tragically, several workers met untimely ends due to the hazards present in the facilities.

Stocal persevered in sign-making until the 1950s, leaving an enduring legacy with their unmistakeable designs gracing international brands such as Gillette.
